What is informed consent, really? Is saying “I am going to check your cervix now” informed consent? How about “Let me know when you’re ready for me to check your cervix”? And what is a doula, birth partner, or birthing person to do when they are not receiving proper informed consent? How do we even know? The Birth Kweens are Karly, a midwife and Ali, A doula and they join us today to really delve deep into this important topic from all angles. With over 700 babies delivered and nearly two decades of clinical experience as both a licensed midwife and hormone specialist, Karly Nuttall was first introduced to the birth world when her mom gave birth to her two younger brothers at home. Since then she has interned at a busy birth center in El Paso, TX, became a Licensed Midwife in California, gained a lot of experience working at a birth center in San Diego, started her own practice, volunteered delivering babies in Senegal, West Africa, and acquired certifications as a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner and Vaginal Steam Practitioner.

Ali Feroah is a doula, photographer, and co-host of the new informative and funny birth and women’s health podcast, Birth Kweens. A Nevada transplant to San Diego, Feroah got her start in the birth world fresh off of graduation from the University of San Diego in 2011. After a viewing of the educational documentary “The Business of Being Born” piqued her interest, the health and lifestyle coach sought out a career in birth work.
